Carpet spot removal can be a sticky issue.  While a carpet cleaning professional has an arsenal of different spot removing agents at hand to take care of just about any spot, the average consumer is bombarded with advertisements for products claiming to be a "miracle spot remover".  Unfortunately these "miracle spot removers" have very little useful informations to help you successfully remove many spots from your carpet.

Below are some of the basic principles professional carpet cleaners use to remove spots from your carpet.

Like dissolves in like

Use a water based spot remover to remove water based spots ( with water based spot removers try to use one that has the opposite pH of the spot)

Use a solvent based spot remover to remove oil based spots

  1. Always remember to remove as much of the spot from the carpet prior to using a spot remover.
  2. Use a clean white towel to soak up the liquid.
  3. Use the dull side of a butter knife to gently scrape up any food spill.
  4. Next apply spot remover to a small section of the spot and blot with towel to see if the spot is coming out of carpet.
  5. If results from #4 are encouraging start to work on the rest of the spot from the outside in.  This will help prevent the spot from spreading.
  6. Remember to blot with a clean towel. Do not scrub your carpet, this may damage the carpet fibers.
  7. You may need to add more spot remover from time to time but be careful not to over do it.  More is not necessarily better.
  8. When you have achieved satisfactory results be sure to soak up any residual moisture left over from the spot remover.
  9. Next rinse the area with water.  A good method for doing this would be to soak a towel and blot the area with the soaked towel.  This will remove any unwanted soil attracting residue.
  10. Now dry the area again by blotting with a clean towel. A fan can also be used to achieve a faster dry time.

If you are unable to remove a spot from your carpet you can always call your local carpet cleaner.  Many will be willing to give tips over the phone and some may be willing to take a look at it and possibly remove it for a nominal fee.  Remember to do your research and find a reputable carpet cleaner.
